"Meet Me in Cairo: A Nostalgic Gem
This book literally jerked me back to my 1970s hitch hiking days. Jim Kerr's hitch hiking prose rings true as I lean into long forgotten memories of thumbing at night under dim Vancouver Island road-side street lamps mid-October while trying to stay warm and hoping for benevolent headlights to appear. This book is a nostalgic gem that draws the reader back to simpler times when hitch hiking was an accepted mode of travel for middle-class independent youth who either were not of the age to obtain a driver's license or simply chose this mode of transportation to express a non-conformist bent at saving money. To be honest, I embraced both these reasons. Much of Jim Kerr's book speaks to the independence of two young men who were not ready to tuck into their parent's version of societal expectations. They had other ideas. It was a huge leap of faith for Jim and Blair to chose their own path and push against what family and friends thought best suited them while pointing out anything else would be considered throwing their futures away. Having none of it and betting on themselves on the world stage, the author brings in the Geo-political drama of the mid-1960s that makes for a compelling and entertaining story. I really enjoyed this book and I urge anyone who thumbed a ride in their youth to see if Meet Me in Cairo brings a few long-buried nostalgic memories back into view. Well done Jim Kerr! "
